How much can I contribute through a Backdoor Roth IRA?

There is no separate contribution limit specifically for a Backdoor Roth IRA. The limit is based on the annual contribution limits for a Traditional IRA, because the Backdoor Roth strategy starts with contributing to a Traditional IRA and then converting those funds to a Roth IRA.

For 2026, the IRS contribution limits are:

  • $7,500 per year if you are under age 50

  • $8,600 per year if you are age 50 or older (this includes the $1,100 catch-up contribution)

These limits apply to the combined contributions you make to all your IRAs, including both Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs.

How this applies to a Backdoor Roth IRA

When using the Backdoor Roth strategy:

  1. You make a non-deductible contribution to a Traditional IRA.

  2. You then convert those funds to a Roth IRA.

Because the contribution limit applies to the Traditional IRA step, the amount you convert usually corresponds to the amount you contributed.
